WOODLAWN — For the first time in its 116-year history, Mount Carmel High School has named a new president who is not a member of the clergy.

Edward Hughes will take over as president of the Catholic high school at 6410 S. Dante Ave. on July 1.

The appointment of Hughes, a 1970 graduate of the school, marks the first time the school will be led by a layperson.

“As the first lay president of Mount Carmel, I have no doubt that Ned Hughes will continue to strengthen our 116-year Catholic-Carmelite mission of living with zeal for God, for life and for learning,” said Tony Mazurkiewicz, the current president of the school and a friar, in an announcement of the appointment.

Hughes retired from Motorola last year and served on the school’s board of directors and finance committee.

He was selected from a slate of strong applicants because of his experience, financial acumen and passion for his alma mater, according to an announcement from the school.

“His experience in business and his deep roots in the Mount Carmel community will be a great fit to lead our school into the future,” Principal John Stimler said in the release.

Hughes was expected to be introduced to the students as the next president at an assembly on Tuesday.
