WICKER PARK —  The sudden death of Prince last Thursday prompted a Wicker Park woman to turn her porch into a shrine for the 57-year-old pop legend.

"I thought I need to put something up. I went to the dollar store and bought everything purple I could find," said Sharon King, whose porch is often a gathering spot for neighbors in the 1200 block of Marion Court.

King's neighbor, Kate LeFurgy, assisted in the effort by fashioning Prince's symbol out of cardboard.  The shrine includes a tablecloth draped over the porch railing and flowers.

Over the weekend, people walking down the street took pictures of the porch and were humming Prince songs, King said, adding, "It touched everyone."

King, who is also 57, the same age the singer was when he died, said she "grew up with Prince" and the first album she bought was Prince's "1999," released in 1982.

King, who is semi-retired, has lived on Marion Court since 1997.

LeFurgy said on Monday that she believes Marion Court, located between Ellen and Division streets, is among the city's smallest blocks.

When asked how long the shrine will stay up, King says she plans to remove it after there is a public ceremony to honor Prince.
