THE LOOP — One of the biggest theaters Downtown will be even bigger next month.

The Goodman Theatre's Alice Rapoport Center for Education and Engagement, or simply the Alice, will open May 18 above Petterino's restaurant at Dearborn and Randolph streets, the Goodman said Wednesday.

A $15 million project, the 10,000-square-foot Alice will be used for classrooms, hands-on STEM learning labs, and rehearsal space.

Open since 1925, the Goodman is Chicago's oldest and largest non-profit theater. The venue just wrapped up its run of "2666," a play that lasts more than five hours.

The Alice will open amid a big expansion at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Lincoln Park. Second City in Old Town has long offered acting and writing classes.
