COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man used a stun gun on a Walgreens employee who caught his girlfriend stealing over the weekend at the Lincoln Square location, prosecutors said.

Daniel Lopez, 27, and his girlfriend were inside the Walgreens at Lawrence and Western avenues on Saturday when a store manager spotted the girlfriend shoving items into her bag, prosecutors said.

The manager stopped the woman and tried to call 911, according to an arrest report, but Lopez began to "act aggressively" and yell at the manager.

That's when Lopez pulled out a 3,800-volt stun gun and attacked the manager, leaving burn marks on the 29-year-old man's neck, according to police and prosecutors.

When police arrested Lopez about 7:50 p.m. Saturday, he told them the attack was accidental, the arrest report said.

Lopez claims he was frustrated that the store manager was not listening to what he was saying, and that the stun gun accidentally went off as Lopez tried to knock a phone out of the manager's hand, court records show.

Lopez's girlfriend got away during the commotion, police said.

According to authorities, she had tried to steal two sandwiches, a back brace and two wrist braces from the store at 4801 N. Lincoln Ave.

Lopez, of the 3700 block of North Damen Avenue, is charged with aggravated battery to a merchant and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Police said he has prior convictions for theft and burglary.

Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Lopez held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The incident was captured on Walgreens surveillance cameras, officials said.
