ALBANY PARK — In honor of the late civil rights leader Cesar Chavez, organizations in Albany Park and North Park will come together for a day of volunteer projects, sprucing up parks and gardens across the area.

There's still time to sign up to lend a hand during the Cesar Chavez Day of Service, 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday.

Projects to choose from:

• Global Garden, Lawrence and Sacramento: overall cleanup, bench building, fence art, spread wood chips and garden bed preparation.

• Northside College Prep High School, 5501 N. Kedzie Ave.: prepare 10 garden beds to be used by refugee families.

• Eugene Field Park, Foster and Avers: overall cleanup, mulching and tree trimming (with help from Tree Keepers).

Register online by March 31. On the day of the event, check in will be at 8:45 a.m. at the various sites. Work begins at 9:30 a.m. and wraps up at 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

Participating organizations include Northeastern Illinois University, the North River Commission, Peterson Garden Project, Chicago Park District, Openlands and Roosevelt High School.

This is the third annual Chavez Day of Service in Albany Park and North Park.

Chavez is best-known as the co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers of America), which is one reason the day's activities include Global Garden and its refugee training farm.
