BEVERLY — Voters in the 19th Ward pulled Republican ballots in Tuesday's primary election at nearly twice the rate as 2012, according to Chicago's Board of Election Commissioners.

Residents of the ward that includes Beverly, Mount Greenwood and portions of Morgan Park grabbed 4,933 GOP ballots Tuesday, up 84 percent compared to the 2,682 GOP ballots in 2012, the elections board found.

As a result of the increase, the 19th Ward ranked fourth among total wards in the city for the number of GOP ballots pulled — behind the historically Republican enclaves of the 41st, 42nd and 43rd wards respectively.

Republican front-runner Donald Trump was the favorite among 19th Ward voters on the GOP side. Trump drew 2,548 votes or 51.98 percent of the votes Tuesday in the ward on the Far Southwest Side.

On the other side of the aisle, 19th Ward residents pulled 18,296 Democratic ballots on Tuesday, compared to 11,800 Democratic ballots in 2012.

Democrats in the 19th Ward favored Bernie Sanders. The Vermont senator received 8,812 votes or 49.8 percent of total in the ward compared to Hillary Clinton, who received 8,251 votes or 46.6 percent of the total.

It's worth noting that ward boundaries were redrawn throughout the city since the 2012 election, which would impact overall vote totals. But the 19th Ward remained largely intact in the most recent remapping.

The 19th Ward has also historically led the city in terms of the number of ballots cast.
