Bridgeport Flashback: Mayor Richard J. Daley Stumping in the Neighborhood

By Ed Komenda | March 16, 2016 5:35am

BRIDGEPORT — As voters hit the polls in what may be remembered as the wildest presidential election since 1968, let’s go back in time.

Here's a photo of Mayor Richard J. Daley — in his first run to become Chicago's mayor — stumping on a neighborhood stage under a banner that reads: "BRIDGEPORT'S FAVORITE SON.”

Someone snapped the photo sometime before Daley was first elected mayor in 1955, according to Neil Gale, the historian behind Living History of Illinois and Chicago who posted the archived photo on Facebook.

It’s unknown where the photo was taken — but Facebook comments suggest the site might be the Ramova Theater or the field house at Mark White Square, now McGuane Park.

After taking office in 1955, Richard J. Daley was re-elected five times, serving as mayor for 21 years until his death.
