PORTAGE PARK — State Rep. Jaime Andrade defeated Harish Patel to win re-election to the General Assembly representing the 40th District in the Illinois House, according to unofficial election returns Tuesday night.

Andrade won 60 percent of the vote in what was one of the most expensive races for the Illinois House, with 72 percent of precincts reporting, according to elections officials.

Patel tried to convince voters that Andrade was a machine politician responsible for the state's unprecedented budget crisis that threatens the state's poorest residents.

However, Andrade used tens of thousands of dollars of campaign contributions from the state Democratic Party and House Speaker Michael Madigan to tell voters that Patel, who campaigned as an independent Democrat, was actually a member of the Tea Party who would support Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner if elected.

No candidate from the Republican Party ran for the position representing Irving Park, Albany Park, Avondale, Logan Square and Portage Park.
