Western-Belmont Reopens In Both Directions, In Time For Evening Commute

ROSCOE VILLAGE — Following the weekend's full closure, Western Avenue is now open to traffic in both directions at Belmont, a day ahead of schedule and in time for the evening commute.

Demolition of the Western-Belmont viaduct had been expected to continue through Tuesday morning but is now complete, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Southbound Western Avenue, which had been remained closed Monday between Roscoe and Belmont, reopened late Monday afternoon, more than 12 hours earlier than anticipated, CDOT said in a statement.

The agency thanked "all the neighborhood residents who put up with the disturbance while we completed the demolition on an expedited basis."

A second full closure of Western, included in the project's original timeline, won't be necessary, according to CDOT.

Western will be reduced to a single lane in both directions for the next five months from George Street to Cornelia Avenue, while the Western/Belmont/Clybourn intersection is remade into a grade-level, five-leg junction.
