BRONZEVILLE — A new Mariano’s grocery store coming to Bronzeville is going to have the neighborhood’s history plastered all over the outside of the building.

Chris Devins, an urban planner, will install photo murals of 32 of the neighborhood’s famous residents along the outside of the grocery store.

Devins said Saturday he’s planning to include Nat King Cole, Lou Rawls, Lorraine Hansberry and 29 others along the Martin Luther King Drive and Pershing Road faces of the 74,000 square feet store.

“The purpose is to highlight Bronzeville's historic identity,” Devins said. “The ultimate goal is positioning Bronzeville as a center for African-American arts, entertainment and culture.”

Devins has installed photo murals in Bronzeville, Chatham and Hyde Park to help celebrate the people who live there.

The Mariano’s store is under construction and is expected to open later this year.
