UPTOWN — Between January 1 and March 1, there were over 40 different kinds of theft in Beat 1913, officers said at Tuesday's CAPS meeting.

Beat 1913 is bordered by Montrose Avenue on the south, Lawrence Avenue on the north, Broadway on the east and Clark Street on the west.

"A number of the thefts happened at Truman College," some occurred at nursing homes and a few involved bicycles, said Town Hall District sergeant Jason Clark, reminding residents to register their bikes with the Chicago Police Department "especially because the weather is getting nice."

During the meeting, which was held at Courtenay Language Arts Center, at 4420 N. Beacon St., Clark said while the top crimes for Beat 1913 were similar to previous years, the area has seen decreases in what he termed "violent crime."

Since the beginning of the year, the beat has seen 19 retail thefts, 11 thefts of more than $500, seven thefts of under $500, six thefts from buildings and four motor vehicle thefts. The beat also saw 17 simple battery reports, six criminal damage to car reports, four criminal damage to property reports and four narcotics arrests for possession of marijuana.

When asked about car thefts in the neighborhood, Clark said the district hasn't seen any pattern of stolen cars.

"We have more problems with people stealing catalytic converters or rims off of cars — they come outside and see their car on cinder blocks," Clark said. "That's been a big issue not just here, but across the city."

Last week, residents reported seeing two Toyota Corollas with wheels presumably stolen in the 700 block of West Buena Avenue and the 700 block of West Hutchinson Street. Another theft was reported in the Buena Park area Tuesday, according to Uptown Update.

The next CAPS meeting for Beat 1913 will be May 3.
