Lincoln Park Residents Contribute the Most to Political Campaigns: Analysis

By  Mina Bloom and Tanveer Ali | March 2, 2016 6:15am

LINCOLN PARK — Which neighborhood is giving the most to Democrats in advance of the March 15th presidential primary?

So far, the highest amount of Democratic campaign contributions in the city has come from residents of the 60614 ZIP code, which mostly encompasses Lincoln Park and a portion of Bucktown. Residents there have overwhelmingly backed Hillary Clinton with $359,744 from 192 donors.

That's almost as much as Democratic challenger Bernie Sanders has raised throughout the entire city. Sanders has raised $387,000 from Chicago residents, compared with the Clinton's $2.2 million.

Sanders has also drawn contributions from the 60614 ZIP. But the total amount of money he got from 56 donors pales in comparison: just $18,504.

A Sanders networking event and live music show, dubbed "Bern Fest," is being held in Lincoln Park at Wild Hare nightclub, 2610 N. Halsted St., March 14. Though organizer Andre Vasquez lives in Rogers Park — a neighborhood with more Sanders supporters — he said in an email: "Wild Hare was kind enough to offer a space for it."

Meanwhile, Clinton's campaign has been busy building its North Side office in Old Town at 1543 N. Wells St., another neighborhood with a lot of Clinton supporters.

A spokesman for Clinton's campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, the neighborhood gave virtually nothing to Donald Trump, and also gave little relatively speaking to all Republicans. Residents in 60614 gave Marco Rubio $56,059 in 31 unique donations. Donald Trump raised the least ($1,470) in 3 unique donations.

If recent presidential elections are any indication, contributions will only increase as the election nears.

People living in the 60614 ZIP code donated $2,433,033 in 1,870 unique donations in all of the 2012 election, compared to $3,691,178 in 2,792 unique donations in all of the 2008 election.

According to OpenSecrets.org, a nonprofit site investigating campaign contributions, 60614 contributes 135 times more to political campaigns than the average American ZIP code.

Citywide, Sanders has a nearly 10 percentage-point lead over Clinton when it comes to the number of donations in Chicago. But the former secretary of state has a humongous lead when it comes to actual money.
