BRIGHTON PARK — Less than a month after someone stole 30 iPads from a fourth-grade classroom at Burroughs Elementary, students have something to be excited about.

ComEd has donated $10,000 to the school to buy the kids new Google Chromebooks.

Alongside Sen. Antonio Munoz (D-Chicago) and Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago) on Tuesday morning, ComEd officials presented a giant $10,000 check to the school.

“The fourth-graders were just so excited when they walked in there,” said Richard Morris, the school’s principal of 26 years.

The iPads went missing the day before Valentine's Day.

As neighborhood kids played during the school's open gym hours, someone got into a fourth-grade classroom and swiped the 30 iPads used by Burroughs students.

The school’s four-graders and their their teacher, Maribel Herrera, were devastated.

Herrera immediately got onto a computer to start a GoFundMe page to raise $10,000 to buy new ones for the 60 students who used the devices in the classroom.

But word got around, and Munoz began making calls looking for help. ComEd was soon on board to help the Brighton Park school.

During tight financial times when schools are forced to make tough cuts and do more with less money, Morris said the ComEd donation will go a long way to dampen the harsh budget season.

“Governments seem to be paralyzed,” Morris said, “but at least there are individual people trying to fight for the schools.”
