CHICAGO — Noise complaints, marijuana use and potholes are all issues local voters care about that mayors are charged to address. But do these municipal woes compare to Russian President Vladimir Putin's bullying tactics?

When U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) arrived in Chicago Thursday afternoon, he was greeted by 150 enthusiastic University of Chicago students — and MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

Young supporters surrounded the Democratic presidential hopeful, who graduated from U of C in 1964, as he took questions from Matthews on everything from criminal justice reform to foreign policy.

During the foreign policy segment, Matthews asked Sanders how he would show the United States' political adversaries that he's not to be "messed with."

Sanders seemed mildly annoyed with the line of questioning, but said he was confident in his foreign policy experience, which his opponent Hillary Clinton has repeatedly questioned

"I've taken on every special interest in this country," Sanders said. "I am a fairly tough guy. When I was mayor of Burlington [Vermont], I'd take on everybody. I'm prepared to take on Putin and everybody else."

As a former Secretary of State, Sanders' challenger Clinton has emphasized her strength on foreign policy issues, and this week Sanders' campaign began building a foreign policy team. Before this week, Foreign Policy magazine reports that Sanders' campaign "has been unable to name any full-time foreign policy advisors on staff."
