FORD CITY — A jewelry store within Ford City Mall was the victim of a burglary and a shooting Friday morning, mall officials said.

Tracy Munno, general manager of the mall at 7601 S. Cicero Ave., said the burglary took place at Treasures Jewelry.

"Obviously, incidents like these can happen anywhere," Munno said. "The safety of our customers and our tenants are first and foremost."

Munno also said that the mall is open for business as police continue to investigate.

"We are dedicated to continuing to make Ford City a safe community center."

Chicago Police Cmdr. Al Nagoda said that two men came into the store around 11 a.m. Friday and asked to look at a specific piece of jewelry. Next, they took the jewelry by force and fired warning shots at the ceiling of the store. The men also fired shots into the doors of the mall's north entrance.

"No one was specifically shot at," Nagoda said. "They did this because store officials and mall security was chasing them."

Police and mall officials would not specific what type of jewelry was taken.

Nagoda said that between shooting at the store's ceiling and firing shots at the mall's entrance doors, a total of eight shots were fired.

Nagoda said the two men drove off in a small, silver-colored SUV.

No one was wounded in the shooting, Nagoda said.

College student Alexa Cruz stopped by Ford City to do some shopping after finishing up with her classes at Daley College for the day when she spotted several police cars in front of the mall's entrance.

"I was going to do some shopping but I guess I can't [laughs]," Cruz said. "I shop at this mall. It is the closest mall to me. There's been incidents in the past. I thought things were getting better."
