DOUGLAS — Sixteen people were taken to the hospital after pepper spray was accidentally released Thursday morning in the University of Chicago’s Donoghue Charter School, authorities said.

The Chicago Fire Department said all 16 people were in good condition after someone accidentally released the pepper spray about 9:15 a.m. Thursday in the school at 707 E. 37th St.

"Earlier today, a student at the University of Chicago Charter Donoghue campus released pepper spray into a classroom desk," said Shayne Evans, CEO of the school, in a prepared statement. "All affected students have been examined and treated by medical professionals, and no injuries beyond temporary skin and eye irritation have been reported."

She said the school is working with Chicago Public Schools, the Fire Department, police and the university to provide any resources needed to students and community members.

"School personnel are in the process of investigating the incident and are committed to taking proper disciplinary and preventative measures to ensure the health and safety of students and staff," Evans said. "We are pleased that staff followed the safety protocols we have in place and ensured all students received needed attention in a timely manner."

Eight people were taken to Mercy Hospital and eight were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital.
