BRIDGEPORT — A pair of city aldermen have created a team called the “Alderbears” to jump into frigid Lake Michigan at this year’s Polar Plunge.

Ald. Patrick D. Thompson (11th) and Ald. Matthew O’Shea (19th) are now calling on other aldermen and alderwomen to join them at the 16th annual event March 6 to raise money for Special Olympics Chicago.

The duo sent a letter to ward offices across the city to recruit more bodies for the Alderbears.

The letter begins: “Have your constituents told you to go jump in the lake? Ours have, which is why we’ve formed a team to participate in the 16th Annual Chicago Polar Plunge…”

Thompson and O’Shea ask registrants to raise a minimum of $175 each. Aldermen and neighborhood folks can register here.

The Polar Plunge often draws celebrities to take a dive. Last year, Vince Vaughn was the VIP, or Very Important Plunger. The year before, Jimmy Fallon and Mayor Rahm Emanuel showed up.
