HYDE PARK — Just as the city's weathering its first big snowstorm of the winter, Chicago is invited to "Feel the Bern."

Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has scheduled a pair of events Thursday evening, both at local universities.

First he'll return to his alma mater, the University of Chicago, for an event being labeled "MSNBC College Tour With Chris Matthews," the TV news pundit. It begins at 6 p.m. at the Quadrangle Club, 1155 E. 57th St., but it's "open to students by invitation only."

A public event follows at Chicago State University's Jones Convocation Center, 9501 S. King Drive. The Sanders campaign advises: "This event is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are strongly encouraged." Doors open at 6 p.m., and the program is expected to start at 8:30 p.m.

The old Maroon has been in the local news lately after a photograph resurfaced from the Chicago Tribune archives showing Sanders being arrested in a 1963 civil-rights protest in Englewood.

Yet the left-wing senator nonetheless finds himself playing catchup for the March 15 primary in Illinois, the native state of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, especially after she kicked off her campaign here with an appearance last week at the Parkway Ballroom in Bronzeville.
