ANDERSONVILLE — The Andersonville Pastoral shop offers one of the most luxurious and rarest ways to enjoy fine mustards — from a tap.
The Maille Mustard tap serves mustard "the traditional way — drawn by hand from ingeniously engineered pumps," according to its website.
The tap, at the Pastoral, 5212 N. Clark St., is the only one in Chicago, and Chicago is the third U.S. city to get one of the taps, a spokesman for the company said.
"There's definitely a novelty to it," said Rachel Morkunas, the store's manager. "It's definitely a wow. People enjoy watching us fill them. It's kind of fun, and you get a really cute jar with it."
The tap is treated similar to a "growler system" at a craft brewery. The first jar costs $25, but a refill is $10, and the store will clean the jar for you, Morkunas said.
The tap system also allows the store to change which mustard is on tap. Currently, Maille's white wine mustard is on tap, which the company describes as "a perfect combination of white wine notes and intense, pungent mustard seeds" that is "to be savored with red and white cold meats."
"It's definitely got a kick to it, but as far as mustards go, it's very approachable," said Morkunas, adding the store also carries some of Maille's other flavors in retail jars.
