EDGEWATER — Weeks after he was scalded with hot water, Driver the cat is showing signs of improvement, according to those taking care of him at Edgewater's Felines & Canines Shelter.

Driver will need more surgery and is now wearing a protective cone around its neck, but he's already become more independent, Felines & Canines executive director Abby Smith said.

"He's already using the litterbox and walking around perfectly well," Smith told DNAinfo Wednesday. "He may not be able to do things like jump up high, but we're hopeful he'll be making a full recovery."

Driver will need laser treatments twice a week and "at least two more surgeries" for his severe burns, Smith said, and it remains to be seen whether all his hair will grow back afterward.

On Feb. 5, 18-year-old Leon Teague was charged with animal cruelty and animal torture after posting a video of himself pouring boiling water on the cat near his front porch.

In a Monday Facebook post, Smith also relayed concerns she heard about "several fraudulent GoFundMe pages set up in Driver's name." Since then, she added, both pages have been reported and taken down.

Anyone who wants to donate to Felines & Canines, 6379 N. Paulina Ave., can do so through their website.
