Original Rainbow Cone Opening Friday at Noon

BEVERLY — Original Rainbow Cone will reopen for the season at noon Friday at 9233 S. Western Ave.

The South Side ice cream shop said on Facebook that a grand reopening celebration will be held Saturday as the shop celebrates its 90th anniversary.

The opening is a harbinger of spring and summer weather each year, notoriously marked by round-the-block lines for the Chicago staple's signature cone: one slice each of chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House, pistachio and orange sherbet jammed into a cone.

"Rainbow Cone has been part of spring since it opened in May 1926 and every year since through the Great Depression, through wars, through everything,” manager Michelle Desnoyer told Mark Konkol at last spring's opening. “When we open our doors it means spring is around the corner.”
