CHICAGO — Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is one of the better-looking quarterbacks in the NFL. And that's not just the opinion of his wife, Kristin Cavallari.

A story in the Feb. 8 issue of Sports Illustrated investigates the handsome QB phenomenon, asking, "Why do quarterbacks seem so good looking?"

In doing so, it conducted experiments asking 100 people to rank the attractiveness of a variety of unidentified men's faces. Among the QB's, Cutler scored 8th highest among the 32 passers. On a scale of 1 to 10, Cutler received a 5.26.

If that doesn't seem too high, consider the hunkiest QB was Alex Smith of the Chiefs at 6.54. Last was Sam Bradford of the Rams at 3.28.

As for your Super Bowl matchup, Carolina's Cam Newton beats Denver's Peyton Manning in the looks department: 4.39 to 3.85.

In general, experts say facial symmetry is related to perceptions of beauty. As the story says, think George Clooney vs Lyle Lovett.

The account of the test is included in a new book "This is Your Brain on Sports: The Science of Underdogs, the Value of Rivalry and What We Learn from the T-Shirt Cannon" by L. Jon Wertheim and Sam Sommers.
