Sweet Honey in the Rock Composer Giving Free Shows and Lessons in Hyde Park

HYDE PARK — Ysaye Barnwell, a singer and composer with the group Sweet Honey in the Rock, will spend two days in Hyde Park performing free concerts and giving free music lessons on Feb. 12-13.

Barnwell will kick off the weekend of music with an intimate concert and conversation at 6 p.m. Feb. 12 in the upstairs meeting hall at the University Church, 5655 S. University Ave.

She will move to Augustana chapel of the Lutheran School of Theology, 1100 E. 55th St., for a 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 13 for a workshop on “building a vocal community” with seven hours of lessons on music, the history of the African American diaspora and using singing traditions to build community.

Both events are free and open to the public, but space is limited.
