LATHROP HOMES — A developer has provided a sneak peek of the master plan to renew and redevelop the historic Lathrop Homes housing complex.
The project, which will be one of the biggest on the North Side in years, will include a total of 1,116 housing units, 400 of which will be public housing.
The redevelopment also includes significant park and landscaping elements along the Chicago River.
The 32-acre site is bordered by the River, Diversey Parkway and Clybourn and Damen streets.
The Lathrop Homes were built in the 1930s and included 925 public housing units. The majority of the current buildings are boarded up, but some residents remain.
The plan calls for preserving 19 of the 31 existing historic structures as well as preserving and restoring landscape architecture across 11 acres of green and open space.
Of the 1,116 housing units, 400 will be public housing, 222 affordable and 494 market rate.
There is a meeting to discuss the master plan Wednesday night, where Ald. Proco Joe Moreno (1st), Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd), CHA representatives and developers are expected.
The master plan is expected to be finalized in February and the project is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2016.
