CHICAGO — The federal government is soon expected to declare an end to the E.coli outbreak that sickened more than 50 Chipotle customers across the country, but the source of the contamination is still unknown, according to a report.
The Wall Street Journal, crediting anonymous sources, said an announcement could come as soon as Monday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has been investigating the outbreak at the popular burrito chain since it was first reported late last year. The newspaper says 53 Chipotle customers reported getting sick, and 20 of them were hospitalized, since October. At least one of those cases was reported in Illinois.
The outbreak originated in the Pacific Northwest, but it has been more than two months since any illness related to Chipotle has been reported, the paper notes. Still, federal investigators have yet to identify the ingredient responsible for the contamination.
In September, a popular Chipotle on Michigan Avenue was briefly shut down by the city's health department for fruit flies and other infractions, but reopened soon after.
