ROGERS PARK — Police on the North Side are "saturating" the area surrounding Loyola University this week after shootings left a student critically injured and another woman wounded over the weekend.
The Loyola student who was shot Friday night and the 23-year-old woman shot on North Greenview Avenue Saturday night are not related, and both women are expected to recover, Ald. Joe Moore (49th) said in an email to residents Sunday afternoon.
The 19-year-old Loyola student was struck by bullets from a passing car in her back around 9:30 p.m. Friday in the 6700 block of North Clark Street, leaving her in critical condition.
She was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she is on the road to recovery after surgery, Moore said.
She is believed to be the unintended target of a gang shooting, Moore said, and police are reviewing security footage near the scene, as well as testing shell casings left behind hoping to connect them with a specific weapon.
Witnesses saw a gray-colored Nissan Altima flee the scene of the shooting, Loyola officials said, but no further details about the shooter were available.
Less than 24 hours later, a 23-year-old woman was shot in her hip, stomach and arm after police said a shooter walked up to her as she was walking to her car and fired shots in her direction. He then fled in a dark-colored car.
Moore said police told him the shooting was not related to the Loyola student shooting, nor was it gang-related.
"Instead, it appears to have been a domestic dispute, arising out of an argument over money that the offender believed the victim owed him," Moore wrote to residents.
The gunman is in police custody, and the woman is recovering at St. Francis Hospital.
After the weekend violence, Cmdr. Roberto Nieves of the Rogers Park District said the department is saturating the area with both uniformed and plainclothes officers, Moore said. Loyola also added transportation options for students on campus over the weekend, easing the nerves of students walking in the area.
