HYDE PARK — University of Chicago police said Thursday that after an investigation police believe a reported armed robbery on campus on Monday never happened.

Marlon C. Lynch, associate vice president for safety, security and civic affairs at the university, on Thursday said that after police reviewed security footage they do not believe a student was robbed at gunpoint on Monday.

On Tuesday university police issued a security warning after a student reported that while leaving the Reynolds Club, 5706 S. University Ave. about 8:50 p.m., he was asked by a woman estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old for $8 and directions to a shelter.

The student claimed the woman then pulled a gun on him and said, “Do you have any money now?”

Lynch said security footage does not show evidence of a crime as described.

“No weapon was displayed by the alleged suspect and no robbery occurred,” Lynch said in an emailed statement.
