CANARYVILLE — You may have read rumors that Thomas McInerney's Sons, the neighborhood's historic funeral home at 4535 S. Wallace, is closing.

It's not true, Funeral Director Charles Siedlecki said.

"I've put over $140,000 into this building since I got here," Siedlecki said. "A new roof, new carpeting, new boilers, new water heater. The list would be five pages long of everything I've done here."

The rumor stemmed from a Facebook post published by a former employee. Though the building was for sale at one point, it has been taken off the market.

If he planned to sell the 143-year-old business, Siedlecki said, he wouldn't have dumped so much money into the place.

The post quickly caught the neighborhood's attention, forcing to Siedlecki to show up to the neighborhood's CAPS meeting to let locals know the truth.

"I just wanted to make it clear to everybody that it hasn't been sold," Siedlecki said. "The property we own on 159th is for sale, but the funeral home here is not. I don't want anybody to think we're abandoning our neighborhood."
