CHICAGO — Four Dunbar High School students were wounded after a daytime shooting in Bronzeville Tuesday, officials said.

Around 3:40 p.m., the teens — all between the ages of 16 and 17 years old — were sitting in a parked minivan when someone shot at them, according to Chief of Patrol Eddie Johnson.

Three of the teens were shot and suffered non life-threatening injuries, Johnson said. A fourth teen was also wounded, possibly by broken class from the window, police said.

The teens were all taken to area hospitals, according to Chicago Fire Department officials. One was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, two were taken to Stroger Hospital, and a fourth was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, they said.

Johnson said police believe the shooting was in retaliation for an earlier shooting at the corner of 37th Street and Michigan Avenue around 11 a.m. Tuesday. In that incident, police said, a 23-year-old man was shot in his right arm.

"We're working with CPS to make sure there's no further retaliation," Johnson said.

Detectives are investigating the shooting, Johnson said, and police have identified "several promising leads" as to whom the shooters might have been.

Police said two of the three teens shot are documented gang members.
