HYDE PARK — Urban agriculture experts will help gardeners navigate the city’s new composting laws and other topics at K.A.M. Isaiah Israel’s annual Food Justice and Sustainability Weekend starting Friday.

The annual series of workshops over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend provides free lessons on beekeeping, composting, designing large-scale gardens and other topics on Friday through Sunday at the synagogue at 1100 E. Hyde Park Blvd.

The weekend kicks off Friday with a lecture by Field Museum Conservation Ecologist Abigail Derby Lewis titled “Building Resilient Communities in a Changing Climate.”

Workshops start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with a group effort to design an urban food forest for the Midway Plaisance with a panel of agriculture experts.

The event continues on Sunday with 16 more workshops on everything from composting laws in Chicago to how to improve one’s mood with food.

A full schedule is available on the synagogue’s website.

All events are free and open to the public.
