Men Charged With Murder in 17-Year-Old's Death in Brighton Park, Police Say

By  Kelly Bauer and Alex Nitkin | January 10, 2016 12:59pm

CHICAGO — Two men have been charged with murder in the shooting death of a teen in Brighton Park, police said.

Around 10:25 p.m. Thursday, the 17-year-old was standing with a group in the 3100 block of West 41st Place when a white SUV pulled up and someone inside shot him multiple times, Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman, said at the time of the incident. The teen, identified as David Gonzalez, was later pronounced dead.

Moments after the shooting, Sedevic said, officers tried to pull over a car that was driving "at a high rate of speed" in the 3200 block of South Claremont Avenue. Police chased the car until it crashed at 32nd Street and Western Avenue.

Three people ran from the car, and one pointed a gun at an officer, police said at the time. At least one officer then fired shots, but no one was hurt.

Sergio Gonzalez and Jose Juarez, both 20, were charged in connection to the teen's death, police said in a Sunday news release. Police were still looking for the third person after the shooting, but provided no update on the search Sunday.

Juarez, of the 2500 block of Hainsworth Avenue, was charged with murder, assaulting an officer, unlawfully possessing a gun as a street gang member and unlawful use of weapon. Gonzalez, of the 3300 block of South Oakley Avenue, was charged with murder.
