HYDE PARK — The Museum of Science and Industry will be free for Illinois residents on weekdays starting Jan. 18, when the museum kicks off its Black Creativity program through Jan. 29.

Starting on Martin Luther King Day, the museum, 5700 S. Lake Shore Drive, will open a juried art exhibit and hold daily workshops where kids can meet professional scientists and get a hands-on experience of the work in the Innovation Studio.

The museum has hosted the exhibit of more than 100 African-American artists from around the country for the last 46 years, which runs during Black History Month in February, closing on Feb. 27. The exhibit is included with museum admission.

The program with scientists is included with museum admission on Jan. 18 as part of the museum’s family day, and sessions start daily at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.

Workshops in the Innovation Studio where visitors can get their hands on the materials and equipment used by scientists are also included with museum admission, and workshops start hourly from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
