No, Alderman Solis Is NOT Selling Spanx: Office Moves, Hilarity Ensues

HEART OF CHICAGO — No, Ald. Danny Solis (25th) isn't getting into the waist-training and women's spa business.

But you could be forgiven for thinking just that.

The alderman's former office at 2439 S. Oakley Ave. has a new tenant, which apparently plastered photos of women wearing girdles and shapewear on the storefront windows, though the alderman's name and contact information still adorn the awning above.

It's unclear exactly what the new business is. A sign near the door reads "Woman & More," though the business does not yet have a Web presence.

Text on one of the pictures mentions, in Spanish, "cellulite reduction" and ultrasound services.

Not even the alderman, who moved from the Oakley Avenue location in 2013, knows exactly what kind of business it is.

"At first I didn't [laugh], but then I saw it seems to be some sort of promotion to be slimmer or something," Solis said. "Then I did do a chuckle."

Solis said an aide on Thursday sent him a photo of the storefront, showing buxom women wearing waist trainers or girdles below the awning that contains his name and information. The alderman's staff will work to remove the awning to avoid any further confusion, he said.

"It doesn't look good for me," Solis said. "I imagine some of my enemies must be having a field day on social media."

The storefront has puzzled neighbors, many of who have seen the humorous juxtaposition but knew the alderman's office was long gone.

"It is pretty funny, huh?" said Laura Al-Khouja, who was walking home with groceries when she walked past the storefront. "I guess [Solis] doesn't mind."

Al-Khouja said she noticed the new window dressings in November. But further improvements to the building — or the presence of business owners — have not been spotted.

"It looks like a woman's spa," she said. "But we never see lights on or anything."

The Oakley Avenue alderman's office closed in August 2013. The 25th Ward office then moved to 1800 S. Blue Island Ave., and when Giordano's opened in that building last year, the office moved to 1645 S. Blue Island Ave. in October 2015.
