'Star Trek' Stamps Boldly Go Where No Postage Has Gone Before

By Patty Wetli | January 1, 2016 11:53am

LINCOLN SQUARE — Stamps, the final frontier.

Fifty years after its premiere on television, "Star Trek" is ready for interstate, if not intergalactic, travel via the United States Postal Service.

A series of four "Star Trek"-themed Forever stamps was among the postage newcomers announced for 2016 by the USPS. The date of issuance and location of the stamp dedication ceremony — yep, that's a real thing — have yet to be determined. (We'd put our money on August's official 50th anniversary convention in Vegas.)

The stamps, designed by the graphics firm The Heads of State, opt for iconic imagery instead of personalities, thereby nullifying the Next Generation vs. Original Cast vs. Reboot debate.

The stamps depict the Starship Enterprise, the silhouette of a crewman and the Vulcan salute. [2016 USPS]

More than 20 designs, in addition to "Star Trek," are debuting in 2016, including tributes to jazz singer Sarah Vaughn, actress and diplomat Shirley Temple, and educator Jaime Escalante, who inspired the movie "Stand and Deliver."

Getting married in 2016? Meet the new "Love" stamp.

The stamp features a paper heart created using the ancient technique of quilling. It will be issued Jan. 12. [2016 USPS]

Have a pet? There's a stamp to tug at your wallet, whether your fur baby is puppy or a hermit crab. Is it just us, or is that snake stamp eyeing the mouse stamp?

Our personal fave is the soda fountain series. Too bad they didn't take the retro concept one step further — remember when stamps weren't self-sticking? Give us a root beer float-flavored stamp to lick and we'd be excited about snail mail again.
