HYDE PARK — Hyde Park’s ballerinas will take to the stage Friday through Sunday for the annual performance of “The Nutcracker,” with a new holiday bazaar before each performance.

Attendees will get a chance this year to finish some holiday shopping and make some festive crafts with some of the characters from the ballet.

The holiday bazaar will be held from noon-6 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday at Mandel Hall, 1131 E. 57th St. on the University of Chicago campus.

One of the annual traditions of the 1½-hour performance, which brings together 175 dancers from the community and the Hyde Park School of Dance, is a special guest playing Mother Ginger, an oversized character whose monstrously large dress opens, spilling child dancers onto the stage.

This year, Hyde Park Herald Editor Daschell Phillips will play the role for the 1 p.m. performance on Saturday and Hyde Park Bank President Mike McGarry will take over the role for the 6 p.m. show on Saturday.

An abridged performance for 800 students will be held at 10 a.m. Friday.

Regular show times are 7 p.m. Friday, 1 and 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students. Reserved-section seats are available for $30. Tickets can be bought online.
