HYDE PARK — The Chicago Urban League is gathering experts on Wednesday for a public meeting on what to do about problems in the Chicago Police Department.

“Truth and Justice for All: Advancing Police and Community Accountability” will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Urban League, 4510 S. Michigan Ave.

“We can no longer allow African-American lives to be taken without accountability,” said Shari Runner, interim president of the Urban League. “The long-standing lack of transparency and due process has earned mistrust in law enforcement.”

She said the forum is the first step in the Urban League's efforts to heal the relationship between police and the community.

The forum brings together lawyer Craig Futterman and journalist Jamie Kalven, who successfully lobbied the courts to release records of police misconduct, with former police department investigator Lorenzo Davis, Black Youth Project organizer Trina Reynolds and others to talk about transparency in the Police Department.

The forum is one of many organized meetings in Bronzeville and elsewhere on the South Side  about what to do about reforms in the Police Department after officer Jason Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder for shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times.

Four South Side aldermen will hold their own meeting on police accountability at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Baptist Church, 4849 S. Martin Luther King Drive.

The forum will be hosted by Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd), Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th), Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th) and Ald. David Moore (17th).
