Chicago Police Department Chief of Detectives Dean Andrews Resigns

By Tanveer Ali | December 7, 2015 5:58pm

CHICAGO — The Chicago Police Department's top detective resigned Sunday, the latest in a series of shakeups in Chicago law enforcement after the release of the Laquan McDonald shooting video.

Chief Dean Andrews, who headed the Bureau of Detectives, stepped down "after considerable deliberation which began last week," according to a statement from Police Supt. John Escalante.

"Chief Andrews felt the timing was best so that the department could move forward with the current leadership transition so a new administration would be able to assemble their own team of senior commanders," Escalante said.

Escalante became the city's top cop after Mayor Rahm Emanuel fired Garry McCarthy from the post for his handling of the police shooting of McDonald.

Andrews was in charge of investigating the killing of David Koschman, which initially resulted in no charges against the nephew of former Mayor Richard M. Daley, according to the Sun-Times. Andrews was among the police being investigated by the city inspector general for handling of the case.

On Monday, the mayor also announced Sharon Fairley as the new head of the Independent Police Review Authority, a city agency separate from the Police Department charged with investigating wrongdoing in the department.
