NEAR NORTH SIDE — Construction on a luxury apartment tower on Orleans Street near the Cabrini-Green row houses is underway.
The 18-story tower at 905 N. Orleans St., dubbed "Niche 905," will replace a parking lot that was used by the St. Luke Church of God in Christ, which is across the street at 914 N. Orleans St.
Once complete, the tower will include 202 luxury apartments, 1,750 square feet of retail space and about 150 parking spaces, according to Ascend Real Estate Group, one of the developers behind the project.
Ascend and its partner on the project, Intercontinental Real Estate Corp., broke ground on the tower Nov. 19.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, the developers presented a $50,000 check to the bishop at St. Luke Church of God as a donation toward the church's building fund.
Those who rent the one-, two- and three-bedroom modern apartments will get to use the building's amenities like a sky deck pool, outdoor bar, grilling stations and fire pit, fitness center and yoga studio.
The tower will also offer more unique amenities like a 110-bike storage area and bike workshop, on-site dog run and pet wash station and a community garden.
It is unclear how much the apartments will cost. A spokeswoman for Ascend could not provide rent prices.
The 150 parking spaces will be on floors two through four.
