COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A protester was carrying a stun gun, 6-inch knife and hydrocodone when he was arrested Downtown Tuesday night, prosecutors said. He was one of five people arrested during demonstrations following the relase of a video showing a police officer shooting and killing 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

Dean Vanriper, 38, of Murrieta, California, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance.

Police first noticed Vanriper when they spotted his knife, prosecutors said. During a pat-down, officers allegedly also recovered the stun gun and 2 ½ hydrocodone pills.

It's not clear why Vanriper was armed.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas on Wednesday said Vanriper could be released on his own recognizance if the Cook County Sheriff's Office agreed to provide electronic monitoring. Alternately, Vanriper could post bond for a $50,000 bail.

Chiampas said the California resident is not allowed to leave Cook County pending trial.
