COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — The Uptown woman who dropped her newborn daughter from an eighth-story window, killing the child, "couldn't be more contrite," her attorney said Monday.

Mubashra Uddin, 19, was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail on Saturday.

According to prosecutors, Uddin hid her pregnancy from her Pakistani parents because she feared the Muslim couple wouldn't approve, the Chicago Tribune reported. Uddin gave birth about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday inside the bedroom she shares with her younger sister. When Uddin heard her mother approach the room, Uddin opened a window and dropped the girl, authorities said.

The child died early Thursday of "multiple blunt force trauma," according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

"Her parents are standing by her, as well as her sisters," Uddin's attorney, Adam Sheppard, said Monday. He wouldn't provide many details, citing the ongoing nature of the case, but said Uddin "couldn't be more contrite."

Sheppard is seeking a bail reduction for Uddin so that she can live at home with her relatives pending trial. A hearing is slated for Thursday.

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office maintains that Uddin should be held without bail.

According to Sheppard, Uddin has been released from a hospital and is in good physical health.

Uddin's daughter was discovered by a passerby who thought he saw a naked baby in the grass about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of West Eastwood Avenue, according to earlier reports. Police found the child alive and in critical condition.

Neighbors set up a memorial of stuffed animals near the scene.
