COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Logan Square man has been convicted of fatally stabbing his girlfriend more than 20 times during a 2014 argument.

Hector Rivera, 56, on Thursday pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years in state prison.

According to prosecutors, Rivera had been arguing with his girlfriend, 38-year-old Erendira Pimentel-Hernandez, on Aug. 27, 2014, when Rivera grabbed a steak knife, followed Pimentel-Hernandez to work and stabbed her approximately 22 times.

The attack happened shortly after 8 a.m. in the 4700 block of North Lawndale Avenue. Several witnesses identified Rivera, prosecutors said in a statement Friday, and Rivera confessed to the crime.

Pimentel-Hernandez suffered stab wounds to her face, torso and arms. She died at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center about four hours later, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Rivera was previously convicted in 1989 of attempted murder, prosecutors said. No further details were available.
