LINCOLN PARK — A second community meeting to discuss building a private school with ground-level retail on Clark Street is set for Monday.

Developer Centrum Partners and Altschool, a San Francisco-based for-profit school that uses technology to tailor student learning, want to build a new school with ground-level retail in place of The Edge Bar & Grill, 2720 N. Clark St.

The second community meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Alcott College Prep, 2625 N. Orchard St., in the ground-level cafeteria.

The developer's plans include a private school holding up to 150 children on the second floor and approximately 9,000 square feet of retail space on the ground level, as well as five parking spots.

Ald. Michele Smith (43rd) said the developer would present a revised traffic study at Monday's meeting.

At the first meeting, some residents questioned children’s safety during high traffic times, and others wondered why Altschool chose the affluent Lincoln Park neighborhood rather than Chicago’s underserved communities.

A zoning change is necessary in order to move the project forward because the site is zoned for a shopping district.
