DOWNTOWN — The 20th annual Christkindlmarket, the German-themed holiday bazaar, will open Nov. 20 at Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington St.

The market featuring more than 50 merchants will run through Dec. 24 this year, manager Kate Bleeker said.

The hours are Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Friday and Saturdays, the market opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m.

Special hours will be in effect on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, and Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, when it will operate between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Chicago market was inspired by the Chritkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany which began in 1545. A Christkind is a fairy-like being dressed in gold and white robes who wears a crown and golden hair. She is similar to Santa Claus in that she brings gifts to kids.
