MORGAN PARK — The Edna White Community Garden will serve as the setting for a "gathering of peace" at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Kathy Figel is the executive director of the garden that sits adjacent to the Morgan Park District police station and partnered with the Beverly Area Planning Association to organize the event.

The gathering comes in response to a the shooting death of Morgan Park resident John Buckner last month as well as the overall violence that continues to plague the city, Figel said.

“While our leaders and our police are doing all they can, we community members can come together and symbolically make a statement about violence and make a plea for peace within a community garden setting,” she said.

The gathering at 1850 W. Monterey Ave. in Morgan Park will run through dusk and feature garden tours, readings, singing, campfires, s’mores and opportunities to interact with friends and neighbors.

Local folk rock duo Steve Haberichter and Nikki Giblin will play in the garden from 4-5 p.m. The music will be followed by a candle-lighting ceremony and a moment of silence for victims of violence.

A $5 suggested donation will go toward the upkeep of the garden and also be used as seed money for the next peace gathering.
