HYDE PARK — A new book from the University of Chicago Press is a literary Noah’s Ark of the city’s rats, pigeons and other creatures.

City Creatures: Animal Encounters in the Chicago Wilderness,” edited by Gavin Van Horn and Dave Aftandilian, is part guidebook, part big fish story and part poem.

The editors will be in Hyde Park from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 29 to explain which part is in the fourth-floor chapel at the Chicago Theological Seminary, 1407 E. 60th St.

The book collects elegies to insects collected in suburban forests, a sort of how-to on stuffing a pheasant and tips on secret spots for birding expeditions around Montrose Harbor.

The book is also littered with photos, paintings and other art among the poetry and essays.

“City Creatures” won’t be released until November, but the editors will give a preview of how all the stories come together during the reading.
