HYDE PARK — Fifty-third Street is about to get a dose of mid-century modernism when its first furniture store opens in October.

Modern Cooperative of Pilsen announced Tuesday it will move to 1500 E. 53rd St. in late October selling vintage furniture and new pieces from Gus Modern.

“We already have quite a big customer base there now — we deliver to Hyde Park quite a bit,” said owner Tiffany Paige. “We might be a little of our own competition.”

At 2,400 square feet, about the same size as the main showroom of the Pilsen store at 1215 W. 18th St., Paige will be putting in more effort to arrange the vignettes of Danish armchairs and vintage dining sets alongside contemporary jewelry, greeting cards and other home décor from local artisans.

Modern Cooperative of Pilsen will offer more of the Gus Modern furniture as well as mid-century modern pieces at its new Hyde Park store.

“It’s hard to do furniture without a lot of space,” Paige said.

She said she think she can get one sectional, one sofa, two credenzas, two benches and an ottoman at least into the Hyde Park storefront, which will be expanded to include the former Lively Athletics space at 5421 S. Harper Ave as well as the corner storefront previously occupied by Anastasia.

Lively Athletics will move to 1457 E. 53rd St.

Modern Cooperative has signed a 6-month lease with landlord the University of Chicago, according to Paige.

But she said she hopes the second location is a success and the store is able to stay in the neighborhood long term.

Paige said she won’t start working on the space until Oct. 1, but she is already excited about her new neighbors, especially Bonne Sante Health Foods.

“We’re so excited, I love Hyde Park so much,” Paige said.
