BOWMANVILLE — Residents in the vicinity of Western and Foster avenues are being told to expect gunshots on Sunday.

A three-volley military salute is being planned sometime between 1 and 2 p.m. at Drake & Son Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave., prompting a community alert from Ald. Pat O'Connor (40th).

"Don't be alarmed if you hear shots fired," the alderman emailed constituents.

Three-volley salutes are not to be confused with 21-gun salutes. The latter involve cannons or artillery fire, whereas the type of volley slated to take place Sunday consists of a rifle party shooting blanks into the air three times.

Military honors are offered to anyone, including reservists, who dies while on active service duty, honorably discharged veterans and military retirees.
