UKRAINIAN VILLAGE — Two big late-summer events — a church carnival packed with rides and Ukrainian Days, a celebration of all things Ukrainian from food to fashion — are both on tap for the weekend and within less than a mile of each other.

A popular parish carnival held the weekend before the private Catholic school starts its fall year, St. Helen's School 10th annual Carnival takes place on Augusta Boulevard between Western and Oakley avenues.

Kicking off at 5 p.m. Friday, the carnival will feature live music with headliners Live Band Karaoke on Saturday night and Low Down Brass Band set for Sunday. View the full schedule for all 11 bands.

Carnival hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Friday; noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. At least six different rides along with games and food vendors are planned for the event, where ticket sales go to the school.

At 2347 W. Augusta Blvd., St. Helen's serves 420 students from Pre-K through eighth grade, with the largest number of enrollees in seven preschool classes, a school spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Seven blocks south of St. Helen's, Ukrainian Days will once again take over Smith Park, 2526 W. Grand Ave., running from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Organized by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, the 32nd annual event includes food,  merchandise vendors, cultural performances and more. Visit the event's Facebook Page to stay updated.
