CHICAGO — Drake Elementary School in the South Loop is one of three schools in the state getting a state-of-the-art fitness center.
Jake Steinfeld, who is known for his fitness empire under the brand "Body By Jake," announced recently that Drake would be among three schools selected to receive a Live Positively Fitness Center.
The fitness center comes from the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils, of which Steinfeld is the chairman.
The school, 2710 S. Dearborn St., was selected because it has "new and innovative ways for promoting student physical activity and wellness," according to a news release.
"I’ve always said that when you give the schools the tools, amazing things will happen," Steinfeld said, according to the news release. "Not only will kids become more active and fit, they will also have increased confidence, improved self-esteem and will achieve greater academic success."
The center will be funded through partnerships with companies like Coca-Cola, Anthem Foundation and Nike at no cost to taxpayers, according to the news release. The foundation has provided centers to more than 1 million children and community members throughout the United States, and it plans to expand its program to every state, according to the news release.
There will be a ribbon cutting to dedicate Drake's center in the fall.
