STREETERVILLE — Those visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) will now be greeted by a lot of concrete.

Three pieces, two of them new, by Brazilian artist Alexandre da Cunha have been selected by the Streeterville museum for its annual Plaza project lasting until July 24, 2016. The sculptures, consisting of repurposed concrete sewer pipes, sewer caps, and a cement mixer encourage "new meanings from otherwise everyday objects and materials," the MCA said.

"This project is an example of the MCA catalyzing new work by exciting artists that have yet to gain broader national attention," MCA Chief Curator Michael Darling said via email. "We are really proud to be associated with this kind of creative growth and have been heartened by how our audiences have enjoyed watching this evolve in real time.”

The sculptures are representative of the artist, who specializes in presenting objects he's found as art. The cement mixer was taken from the truck, while the other two pieces — one of them a stack of pipes — were taken from a concrete pipe factory in west suburban Elgin. Two photos taken by da Cunha are also hanging in the museum lobby as wallpaper.
